Male Breast Reduction Surgery
Male breast reduction surgery is one of the most common procedures for men and is offered by Houston plastic surgeon Dr. Young Cho. The surgery corrects excess breast tissue and fat present on the male chest using liposuction and skin and tissue tightening techniques.
The goal of male breast reduction surgery is to:
- Remove excess male breast tissue and fat
- Improve self-confidence
The male breast reduction surgery takes about one hour to perform and may combine skin and tissue tightening techniques with liposuction, or in some cases, Dr. Cho may perform liposuction alone. If only glandular tissue is to be removed, Dr. Cho can use a scalpel to remove it.
To perform male breast reduction, an incision will be made around the nipple areola or in the underarm. When performing liposuction, excess fat will be dislodged and suctioned out. For good contour following major fat removal, skin removal may also be necessary.
One common way to remove male breast tissue is with liposuction. At several points on the chest, Dr. Cho can remove excess fat to create a flatter chest contour.
Before Male Breast Reduction Surgery
Men who deal with excessive breast tissue are often too embarrassed to discuss the issue and take strides to hide it. This excess may also include fat deposits that do not respond to diet and exercise. The chest can often be tender or sensitive. This condition can occur in adolescents, as well as adults.
To determine if you are an ideal candidate for male breast reduction, Dr. Cho will perform a medical evaluation into the possible causes of your increased breast tissue. Sometimes, the condition is caused by impaired liver function, testosterone deficiency and medication or steroid use. An MRI or mammogram may also be performed to view the breast composition. If the issue cannot be corrected with lifestyle changes, surgery may be considered. At the time of the surgery, you should be at a stable, healthy body weight and be a non-smoker.
After Male Breast Reduction
Following the surgery, you will have your chest wrapped in gauze. You may experience discomfort, swelling and bruising, and Dr. Cho may prescribe medication to manage pain. Your stitches will be removed after 1 to 2 weeks, but you should avoid exercise for 3 weeks. The scars will be permanent but will be hidden in the pigmented area of the nipples. After about three months, you will see the final result, which can be maintained with a healthy lifestyle.
Like other surgical procedures, male breast reduction has some risks involved, which may include noticeable scars, changes in pigment, some asymmetry, infection, skin injury, and excessive bleeding or fluid loss/accumulation.
