Vaginal (Labiaplasty) Rejuvenation
Enlarged or elongated labia are a source of pain, discomfort and embarrassment for many women. This condition affects women of all ages, and although it commonly occurs following childbirth, it can affect women without children, as well.
Vaginal rejuvenation, labiaplasty, is a cosmetic procedure designed to reduce the size and improve the appearance of external genitalia in women. Vaginal rejuvenation may be performed on the inner labia (labia minora), the outer labia (labia majora) or both.
About Vaginal (Labiaplasty) Rejuvenation
The vaginal rejuvenation procedure is relatively minor. It can be performed under local anesthesia with conscious sedation, and the entire labiaplasty procedure only takes about an hour.
There are different vaginal rejuvenation techniques, and depending on your concerns, Dr. Cho will choose the right one for you. For women who are concerned by dark pigmentation as well as the size or shape of their labia, a trim labiaplasty technique may be used, whereas women who are not concerned by pigmentation may opt for a wedge labiaplasty technique. Lasers may also be used during vaginal rejuvenation surgery. Dr. Cho will explain your options and make sure you understand potential labiaplasty outcomes of the procedures well in advance.
Before Vaginal Rejuvenation
During your consultation, Dr. Cho will assess your health and medical history and talk with you about your cosmetic surgery concerns and any discomfort you are experiencing. If the labiaplasty procedure is intended to provide pain relief or restoration to your genitalia, you may wish to speak to your insurance company to see if vaginal rejuvenation is covered.
Before surgery, Dr. Cho will provide you with pre- and post-operative care instructions and answer any questions you have about the labiaplasty procedure. Be sure to avoid taking medications and supplements that can thin the blood in the weeks surrounding your labiaplasty cosmetic surgery procedure, as this may increase bruising and other potential risks.
After Vaginal Rejuvenation
Most patients are able to return to work and resume normal daily activities within one week of their vaginal rejuvenation. Most patients are only mildly uncomfortable for about a week following surgery, and temporary swelling and bruising will be mostly resolved by the third week. Applying cold compresses for the first few days after surgery will also help minimize swelling.
More strenuous physical activity, including swimming and sexual intercourse can typically be resumed within 3 to 6 weeks, however, Dr. Cho will advise you on how long activity restrictions will be needed based on your unique needs.
During your follow-up visits, which are usually scheduled for the first week after surgery and three months later, Dr. Cho will check your healing progress and address any concerns you have, although very few complications occur after vaginal rejuvenation, and most patients are very satisfied with their results.
