Cosmetic Chin Plastic Surgery
To correct a weak chin and poor lower face contours, both male and female patients often seek chin surgery. Chin surgery options to increase chin projection include surgical placement of a chin implant or a procedure known as genioplasty, or chin bone advancement. Genioplasty may also be performed to reduce an over-projected chin by sliding the chin bone backward instead of forward.
Chin augmentation or reduction can improve the balance the proportions of your facial features and also improve the definition of the lower face and neck. Chin surgery is often combined with neck liposuction to further improve face and neckline contours.
About Chin Surgery
Generally, chin surgery is performed while patients are under sedation or general anesthesia. Incisions are small, inconspicuous and usually located under the chin or inside the lower lip. Screws, permanent sutures or a plate may be used to fix your chin implant or chin bone in place during chin surgery. For chin reduction, the chin bone may also be shaved down during the procedure.
Chin surgery can take anywhere from 1 to 3 hours, depending on the extent of the procedure and whether you are getting a chin implant or having your facial bones repositioned. Dr. Cho will recommend the right procedure for you based on your unique anatomy and cosmetic goals.
Before Chin Surgery
Dr. Cho will assess your health and medical history in order to determine whether you are a candidate for chin surgery. Prior to surgery, he will also answer all of your questions, explain the details of your procedure and provide you with pre- and post-operative care instructions.
Avoiding tobacco products, alcohol consumption and blood-thinning medications and supplements will be necessary in the days and weeks surrounding chin surgery, and Dr. Cho may give you other instructions for face or mouth cleansing depending on the incision he plans to use during your procedure.
After Chin Surgery
It is important after chin surgery to keep your head elevated to reduce swelling. Following a soft diet, practicing good oral hygiene and treating the operative area with care are all essential to minimizing discomfort and risk of complication after chin surgery, as well.
Dr. Cho will see you for follow-up appointments in the days and weeks after the procedure to care for your incisions, remove sutures and ensure you are healing properly. After 1 to 2 weeks, you will be through the initial chin surgery recovery period, however note that complete resolution of temporary side effects such as swelling, bruising and numbness and appearance of final results may take several months. After your procedure, you will see improvement in the harmony of your facial features and lower face contours that lasts a lifetime.
