Cheek Filler & Augmentation

Cheek augmentation & cheek filler can enhance the projection of your cheekbones, creating a more aesthetically balanced facial appearance. While the cheek filler surgery typically involves placement of an alloplastic facial implant, other options such as injectable products or fat transfer techniques exist.

Dr. Young Cho provides cheek augmentation to patients who exhibit a lack of cheekbone structure or atrophy of the soft tissue in the cheeks.

About Cheek Filler Augmentation

During your consultation, Dr. Cho will evaluate your face for indications such as:

  • Lack of projection in facial bone structure
  • Degradation of soft tissues in mid-face (lipoatrophy)
  • Flat or wrinkled (deflated) mid-face

Depending on your goals and indications for cheek filler augmentation, Dr. Cho can recommend the right technique for you – whether it’s an alloplastic implant, injectable cheek filler product or autologous transfer technique.

Facial implants come in varying sizes and shapes to match the anatomy of each individual. Most implants are made of a solid silicone rubber material known as silastic, but there are several other cheek filler types that can be utilized. Surgical placement of a facial implant will require an incision inside your upper lip or within the lower eyelid. (When cheek augmentation is combined with a facelift, these incisions may not be necessary). Dr. Cho forms a pocket for the implant and then secures it in place.

Injectable fillers are currently a popular cosmetic treatment, and offer several non-surgical alternatives for cheek augmentation. For short-term results, Dr. Cho may recommend a product such as hyaluronic acid. If long-term results are desired, he may recommend a product such as Calcium Hydroxylapatite or Poly L Lactic Acid. During treatment, the doctor would administer a topical anesthetic and inject the filler into the cheek area, increasing the volume of the skin and thereby augmenting your cheeks.

Autologous Fat Transfer involves the harvesting and subsequent injection of natural fatty tissue. Dr. Cho removes a small amount of fat using liposuction. He then prepares the fat and injects a small amount into the face to correct contour depressions, including sunken cheeks. While fat transfer can achieve natural results, longevity of the procedure is often unpredictable.

A facial implant is one way to increase projection of the cheeks, creating a fuller and more balanced facial profile.

Before Cheek Augmentation

Before cheek augmentation, Dr. Cho will explain the details of the procedure so you can make an educated decision about proceeding with surgery. Specific pre-operative instructions will be provided, which will vary depending on the technique recommended.

After Cheek Augmentation

Results of cheek augmentation (with a facial implant) are immediately visible, though it may take some time for post-operative swelling to resolve. Results of a dermal filler injection will vary, but most will produce an immediate increase in tissue volume. After your cheek augmentation, it’s important to follow Dr. Cho’s instructions closely and attend all follow-up appointments as scheduled.

Facelift surgery can correct skin and muscle laxity in the upper, lower and mid-face, repositioning tissues that have grown loose and saggy with age. Jowls, deep wrinkles and creases and excess skin are addressed with a facelift, and the long-lasting results that are achieved will have you looking refreshed and youthful for years to come.

For facelift patients who also wish to further improve the contours of their lower face, a facelift may be combined with neck contouring procedures, such as a neck lift and liposuction, in order to improve neck and jawline definition. For complete facial rejuvenation, facial fillers or implants may be used to complement your facelift results by providing volume restoration.

About a Facelift

There are a variety of facelift techniques designed to address each patient’s problem areas and unique facial aging concerns. In addition to a full facelift, Dr. Cho offers more targeted options to address specific areas of the face, including a mid-face or cheek lift and lower facelift.

During your consultation, Dr. Cho will talk with you about the details of your customized facelift procedure, including the ideal placement for your incisions and type of anesthesia that will be used during surgery. Most commonly, facelift surgery is performed while patients are under general anesthesia, and the procedure takes about 2 to 3 hours.

Before a Facelift

Prior to your facelift, Dr. Cho will complete a thorough assessment of your health and medical history, as well as answer your questions and give you pre- and post-operative care instructions. Pain medication and antibiotics will also be prescribed so that you may fill your prescriptions prior to surgery.

You will be instructed to avoid tobacco products, certain blood-thinning medications and supplements, as well as alcohol consumption in the weeks and days prior to your facelift. Immediately before your procedure, you will need to report any new health concerns or illnesses to Dr. Cho so he can be sure you are healthy enough for surgery.

After Facelift Surgery

For the first 24 hours after facelift surgery, a bulky dressing will be covering your incisions (usually located along the hairline from ear to ear, near the ears and sometimes under the chin). This, along with any drains placed to reduce fluid collection, will be removed during your first post-operative visit on the day after surgery.

Throughout the next 1 to 2 weeks of your facelift recovery period, Dr. Cho will see you periodically to remove sutures and staples and check on your healing progress. It is crucial to treat the operative area with care during this initial recovery period, and also avoid having your hair treated with chemicals for 3 to 4 weeks following surgery.

After 4 to 8 weeks, your healing will be mostly complete, and temporary swelling, bruising and numbness should be mostly resolved. It may take several months for your final results to be fully realized, but the results are well worth the wait.

Neck Contouring

Neck contouring procedures can improve the appearance of your neck in a variety of ways. With neck lift surgery, loose, excess tissues that create the “turkey neck” look can be removed and tightened, while neck liposuction can address stubborn fat deposits and get rid of a double chin.

Rejuvenating your neck with one or both neck contouring procedures will not only improve the contours of your chin, jawline and neck, but also help you look and feel more youthful and fit.

About Neck Contouring

Dr. Cho will recommend one or both neck contouring procedures based on your cosmetic goals and concerns. If your only concern is a sagging neck and/or neck wrinkles, removing excess skin, muscle tightening and tissue repositioning can be achieved with neck lift surgery. For this procedure, general or sedation anesthesia is used, and incisions are made around the ears.

For permanent fat reduction in the neck area, liposuction is performed under general or local anesthesia. Small incisions are placed on each side of the neck or under the chin, and fat cells are loosened and then removed using a suction tube known as a cannula.

Before Neck Contouring

Prior to your neck contouring, Dr. Cho will perform a physical exam and assess your medical history. If you are a candidate for neck lift and/or neck liposuction, Dr. Cho will help you prepare for surgery by describing the procedures in depth, answering your questions and providing you with pre- and post-operative care instructions.

Patients who undergo neck contouring will be asked to refrain from using tobacco products, alcohol and medications and supplements that can thin the blood in the days and weeks surrounding surgery.

Liposuction can remove fat deposits that hide the youthful angles of your jaw line and neck.

After Neck Contouring

Depending on the extent of your neck contouring, the length of the recovery period will vary. Neck liposuction alone usually requires one week or less to recover, whereas the initial recovery period for neck lift surgery is typically 1 to 3 weeks.

A chin strap or compression garment will likely be necessary for a period of days or weeks after surgery, and Dr. Cho will instruct you on how long you will need it based on your body’s unique healing progress. Keeping your head elevated will also be important during the recovery period to reduce swelling.

After your initial recovery period has passed, it may take several months to see the final results of your neck contouring procedures, however swelling, bruising and discomfort will gradually subside to reveal a firmer, slimmer neck and improved jaw and neckline contours.
