Houston, Spring & The Woodlands Breast Augmentation
Breast Augmentation Surgery
Breast augmentation surgery using saline, silicone or cohesive gel breast implants can enlarge small breasts, improve the proportions of asymmetrical breasts and even correct some breast deformities, such as misshapen or tuberous breasts.
In addition to improving breast size and shape, patients who wish to correct drooping or sagging of the breasts can combine their breast augmentation with breast lift surgery for further enhancement.
Breast augmentation is typically performed while patients are under general or sedation anesthesia. The surgery takes about 1 to 2 hours. In addition to the size and type of implant you choose (saline, silicone or cohesive gel), a variety of other options exist to customize your breast augmentation results, including:
- Breast implant shape (round or anatomical)
- Implant projection (low, moderate, moderate plus or high profile)
- Implant placement (over, under or partially under the chest muscles)
- Implant surface (smooth or textured)
- Incision location (in the breast folds, around the areolas or along the armpits)
Dr. Cho will help you make decisions about all breast augmentation options based on your cosmetic goals, personal preferences and unique anatomy well in advance of surgery. When the day of your procedure arrives, you will feel comfortable and have realistic expectations of the outcome you can expect from your breast implants.
Weeks before your breast augmentation, Dr. Cho will assess your medical history and existing health conditions to ensure surgery is safe for you. He will explain the details of your procedure, answer your questions and provide you with pre- and post-operative instructions to help prepare you for surgery. All breast augmentation patients are required to refrain from using tobacco products, consuming alcohol and taking supplements and medications that can thin the blood in the weeks leading up to surgery.
Plastic surgeons can perform three different incision patterns during breast augmentation: beneath the breast (which is the most common), around the areola or in the underarm.
A hospital stay is generally not necessary after breast augmentation, however, you will need someone to drive you home and help care for you for at least the first 24 to 48 hours following surgery.
Most patients experience some discomfort, swelling and bruising for 1 to 2 weeks after surgery. Once the initial recovery period has passed, patients may return to work and other normal daily activities. Heavy lifting (more than 10 lbs., i.e. a gallon of milk) and strenuous activity may be restricted for about 3 to 4 weeks, or longer, especially if breast implants are placed under the chest muscles. Dr. Cho will tell you exactly when you may resume certain activities after monitoring your healing progress during follow-up appointments.
Within 3 to 6 months, you can expect to be enjoying your lovely new curves and final breast augmentation results, however, keep in mind that it may take as long as a year for scars to fade and minor residual swelling to disappear completely.
