Abdominoplasty / Tummy Tuck
Abdominoplasty / Tummy Tuck Houston
Abdominoplasty, commonly known as the tummy tuck, is a procedure that flattens the tummy and repairs the stretched abdominal muscles. A tummy tuck is a relatively extensive surgical procedure and is frequently performed after pregnancy or significant weight loss.
Dr. Young Cho performs abdominoplasty for women and men who desire a flatter, firmer midsection.
About the Tummy Tuck
Fluctuations in body weight can cause the tissue to stretch, leaving one with a protruding tummy, loose skin and weakened ab muscles, which are the most common indications for a tummy tuck.
During the surgery (which lasts about 2 to 5 hours), Dr. Cho will make an incision above the pubic hairline, taking care to make the incision in a concealable location if possible. The excess skin is removed and the muscles are repaired using sutures. Your navel may be relocated or remodeled during the surgery and liposuction surgery may be performed on adjacent body areas.
The best results from a tummy tuck include outcomes such as:
- Flat abdomen
- Tighter abdominal skin
- Visible muscle tone
- Naturally curved silhouette
Before surgery, Dr. Cho will discuss the individual goals and expected outcome of your tummy tuck. In some cases, a traditional tummy tuck is not recommended. When appropriate, Dr. Cho may advise you to consider alternative (or related) procedures such as panniculectomy, belt lipectomy or a limited incision tummy tuck.
Before your tummy tuck surgery, Dr. Cho will evaluate your conditions and medical history to determine your suitability for the procedure. He may ask about cardiac conditions, previous abdominal surgeries and other important health information before making any recommendation about a procedure.
If you are scheduled to proceed with surgery, Dr. Cho will give you specific instructions for surgery preparation, including medications to avoid and considerations for the recovery period.
A tummy tuck surgery requires an incision across the lower abdomen, which allows Dr. Cho to remove loose skin and tissue, while repairing the stretched abdominal muscles.
After Tummy Tuck Surgery
Immediately following the surgery, the surgical site will be wrapped in gauze and a loose elastic garment. Within 12 to 18 hours after the surgery, the doctor will probably advise you to walk around, while medications will be prescribed to help to manage post-operative pain.
In many cases, special surgical drains are necessary, but will typically be removed within a few days. Sutures are designed to dissolve over time, your first follow-up appointment is scheduled within the first week of recovery. Total recovery time is about six weeks, but you may need to wear a compression garment for several weeks beyond that time.
